Dogs

We are fam-i-ly! What dog breeds make the best family pets?

Thinking about expanding your family and welcoming a new pooch into your home? Choosing the right breed is sometimes easier said than done. Read on to find out which dog breeds make the best family pets and discover which ones suit your home and lifestyle!

Labrador Retriever

Labs have been a firm family favourite for years. These sweet dogs have larger than life appetites for both food and for love! They have a lot of energy and enjoy being outdoors, but they also like to balance it out with a good snuggle on the sofa. Labs enjoy a bit of rough and tumble with the kids and get on well with other dogs too.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Looking for a pooch with a good temperament that’s able to adapt to different situations? Why not opt for King Charles Spaniel. These adorable toy breeds make the best family pets and couldn’t be cuter if they tried. They’re loving and like to be close to their owners at all times. Their small size means they don’t need a huge amount of indoor and outdoor space too!

Beagle

Beagles are pack animals by their very nature. Not only are they adorable, they love being part of a family and will stay by your side through thick and thin. Because they love company so much, they aren’t the best with spending time alone so keep this in mind if your family has a busy schedule.

Golden Retriever

If there was a class clown of dogs, it would be a Golden Retriever. Retrievers are known for being a bit daft but are excellent to train and arguably one of the best breeds for families. They need a lot of physical activity to stay healthy so keep this in mind before adopting your very own. Their easy going nature makes them the perfect companions and they love kids and other pets alike.

French Bulldog

If you don’t have a big back garden or you and your family live in the city, a French Bulldog may be a perfect addition to your crew. They don’t need a massive amount of exercise or space, but enjoy playing with kids and cuddles on the sofa. They’re patient and playful, but exceptionally bright in their own way.

Border Collie

Collies are nothing if not loveable. These energetic dogs make the best family pets, especially to those families that have plenty of outdoor space and live active lifestyles. Collies need plenty of exercise and stimulation so they’re probably not best suited to families who enjoy a more relaxed way of life. Their unwavering loyalty, coupled with their inherently gentle nature, means they are definitely up there as one of the UK favourites.

Bichon Frise

If dogs were humans, the Bichon Frise would be the life of the party. These little fluff-balls are full of energy and love nothing better than playing in the back garden. They enjoy meeting new people and are well known for their friendly disposition. If your house is all about playtime and cuddles, a Bichon Frise may be the ideal dog for you. Not to mention, they’re a low-shedding breed so you won’t have to do any extra vacuuming!

Cocker Spaniel

With their distinctive ears and happy little faces, it’s no surprise that Cocker Spaniels are a family favourite. They’re very active dogs, so plenty of walks are a must but they’re amicable around other pets and kids. When you have a Cocker Spaniel at home, playtime never ends! Friendly and faithful, you can always depend on a Cocker.

Labradoodle

This mix of Poodle and Labrador has become increasingly popular in recent years and it’s no wonder when the result is such a lovable pet! They’re super affectionate and are well known to be devoted to their owners. Not to mention, they’re pretty brainy too! This is one of the reasons why this particular breed is being used increasingly as guide dogs.

Boxer

If unwavering loyalty is what you’re after, a boxer may be the perfect choice. Boxers are well known for being fiercely protective of those they love, so they make ideal family pets. They tend to be quite calm in nature but won’t say no to playing with the kids all afternoon on a warm summer’s day! Similar to some of the other breeds mentioned, boxers need a decent amount of exercise to stay fit and healthy so this is worth careful consideration.

Chihuahua

As far as toy dog breeds go, chihuahuas are high up on the list of our favourites. They make the perfect pets for people who enjoy life at a slower pace, snuggled up in front of the TV, sipping a hot chocolate on a cold day. They don’t need a massive amount of exercise and prefer to stay indoors when it’s cold and miserable outside – and who can blame them really! They’re exceptionally loyal family pets and love nothing better than a snooze on their owner’s lap.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Staffies sometimes get a bad rep. They’re one of the dog breeds most likely to end up in shelters and due to irresponsible and unfair practices, have gained a reputation for being a bit aggressive. In reality, Staffies are sweet, loving and make fantastic companions to those that care for them. Ultimately, all dogs are a product of their upbringing and when given the right love and care, they make the perfect family pets.
